Since Blockbuster
opened its first store in 1985, it has grown into the world's largest
provider of rentable home videocassettes, DVDs, and video games.
Today, on average, more than 3 million customers walk into a U.S. Blockbuster
store each day. Blockbuster has thousands of stores throughout the United
States, its territories, and dozens of foreign countries. Blockbuster
estimates that 64 percent of the U.S. population lives within a 10-minute
drive of one of its stores.
In planning new store locations, Blockbuster performs sophisticated trading-area analysis based on its market share, customer transaction, and real-estate data bases. The analysis also includes data on an area's demographics, life-styles, customer concentration levels, and competition. through this assessment, Blockbuster's store development team is able to minimize cannibalization due to trading area overlap with existing stores, to determine whether a new store should be built or an existing one acquired, and to decide on the appropriate store format.
Blockbuster seeks out locations that are high in terms of customer convenience and visibility. Its traditional format of 4,000-square-foot or larger units is applied in markets where store-to population ratios are low and market condition are optimal. A smaller format is used in rural markets or to reduce cannibalization among its traditional stores. Locations in supermarkets and department stores are used in mature markets where Blockbuster already has a strong presence.
