DUNKIN' DONUTS
After
World War II, William Rosenberg started Industrial
Luncheon Services to sell donuts, sandwiches,
and coffee to factory workers. He purchased
10 unused cab-and-chassis platforms from the New
England Telephone Company and had each outfitted
with stainless steel bodies and side flaps that
could be lifted. Despite the popularity
of the sandwiches, coffee and donuts were the real
best-sellers. So in 1948, Rosenberg opened his first
store, Open Kettle, as an additional outlet
for the sale of donuts.
Rosenberg changed the Open Kettle name to Dunkin' Donuts in 1950 and began franchising. Allied Domecq PLC acquired the chain in 1990. Today, Dunkin' Donuts has more than 5,000 locations worldwide, 3,700 of which are in the United States. It is the world's largest donut-and-coffee chain. It sells 6 million donuts and 2 million cups of coffee daily.
To increase the chance of its stores' succeeding, Dunkin' Donuts has developed specific location standards. Its stand-alone store, for example, generally requires a population of 15,000 or more within its drive-time parameters, a median household income of greater than $ 38,000, and the presence of 10,000 or more workers (since they are frequent customers) within the trading area. Dunkin' Donuts also has specific site requirements. These include a minimum of 20 parking spots, easy access from all traffic directions, high visibility from major arteries (400 feet or more on the approach side), and a 10-year lease with two five-year renewal options.
