Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
The two main forms of diabetes are called
type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Although they
have different causes and, to a great extent
affect different categories of people, they
share three main features.
Diabetes and
Sedentary Lifestyle
The number of
people with type 2 diabetes has been rising
rapidly since the last fifty years. In
addition, more and more people have blood
glucose levels, although they have not been categorized as
diabetes, are too high for good health. This
condition is known as glucose intolerance or
pre-diabetes.
The increase in
the number of people suffering type 2
diabetes around the world is mostly caused
by sedentary lifestyle or a way of life that
does not excel much physical activities.
US to End HIV Travel Ban in January
Obama says visitors with the AIDS
virus are not a threat. Also, researchers confirm that
their H.I.V. vaccine study in Thailand produced limited
results.
In nineteen eighty-seven, H.I.V./AIDS joined a list of
diseases that could keep a person out of the United
States. The government later tried to cancel its
decision. But Congress made the travel ban a part of
immigration law. People with H.I.V., the virus that
causes AIDS, could seek an exception, but that meant
extra work.
Last year, Congress and President George W. Bush began
the process of ending the travel ban. Now President
Obama is finishing that process.

A new study shows that many receive
unnecessary radiation because of the overuse of CT scans
after head injuries.
A concussion happens when the brain is shaken, often in
a car crash or a fall or a strike to the head in sports.
Concussions can be mild, but doctors may order a CT scan
to look for a more serious injury. Computed tomography
provides a detailed image of the brain. But a recent
study warned that more children than necessary are being
exposed to radiation this way.
A
Combination Pill Lowers Blood Pressure and
Bad Cholesterol
A new study shows a pill containing
five medicines may cut heart disease risk in half.
Studies have shown that the fewer medicines a
person has to take the more likely he or she will take
them. Last week, a study was released about a new
treatment that combines five medicines for heart disease
in one pill. Salim Yusuf of McMaster University in
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada was the lead investigator. He
presented the findings at the American College of
Cardiology Conference in Orlando, Florida.
South Africa Tests AIDS
Vaccine
Scientists will use 36
volunteers for the first African-made
vaccine candidates to reach testing in
humans. Thirty-six volunteers in
South Africa will test the safety of an
African-developed vaccine against H.I.V. The
tests are the first step in human clinical
trials of two vaccine candidates developed
at the University of Cape Town.
Researchers
Take a Closer Look at Energy Drinks
Drug dependence experts call for
better labeling with the amount of caffeine and other
ingredients clearly listed on the product. You
could fill a store with all the energy drinks now
available. They promise to make people feel more
energetic and think more clearly. These products have
names like Red Bull, Monster, Ripped Force, Speed Stack
and 5-Hour Energy. They appeal mainly to young people
and are fueled mainly by caffeine.
Recent findings suggest that
doctors may have a little more time to treat strokes
caused by a blockage in blood flow to the brain.
Strokes are a major cause of death and disability. A
stroke is a loss of blood flow in the brain. There are
two kinds: An ischemic stroke happens when a blood
vessel in the brain gets blocked. A hemorrhagic, or
bleeding, stroke happens when a blood vessel breaks.
The
most important thing which patients of
diabetes must do is learning how to control
their blood sugar. Food consists of protein,
carbohydrates, fat, and also fiber. All of
us have to combine these elements in ratio
that is suitable for our bodies. Everybody
has his or her own food ratio. Next time, if
we want to eat something, we can start
making changes in our food intake ratio. One
or two hours after eating our foods, we can
measure our blood glucose level. Make sure
that it is within the allowable range. If it
is always above 200 mg/dl, it means we have
suffered from diabetes.
