Caving in Manokwari
As
a tourist guide, I have been escorting tourists to interesting places around
Manokwari town. For those who like swimming, and snorkeling, I will bring them
to islands in the Dorey bay. There, they can see beautiful corals that thrive
along the coastal area of the tropical islands.
But there are some tourists who prefer to hike through the tropical rainforest
of Papua. For me, as a nature lover, hiking in the Table Mountain is a
recommended trekking site that I always offer to tourists. Besides, it is cheap
to go there, there are some caves that tourists can explore, with the guidance
of experienced forest range, of course.
The interior of the natural caves usually consists of various forms of
stalactites and stalagmites. The former is the rock formation from the roof that
is pointing downwards, whereas the latter is pointing upwards.
It is wet and very humid there. Wearing caving equipment is a must. Tourists
need to wear good clothing, and boots. Tourists also need head light, torch to
help them navigate inside the caves. One might trip and fall if he or she is not
careful enough when exploring the interior of a cave. Animals such as lizards,
bats (small and big), and frogs live in the caves. I always tell tourists not to
catch animals inside the caves. If we want to take pictures, we need to set our
digital still camera to night or dark shootings. The photographs of the interior
of the caves are interesting because the interior of natural caves have forms
that are unique. Don't take pictures or photographs of bats too close, they will
feel uncomfortable and fly away.
Besides caving, other activities that the hiking tourists can do in the Table Mountain of Manokwari are bird watching, insect watching, and mushroom watching. The best time to do bird watching is in the morning and in the afternoon before sunset when the birds are returning to their trees after looking for food the whole day. They will play, sing and dance for awhile before going back and resting in their nests. Bring binoculars, and long-lenses camera if you want to perform bird watching in the Table Mountain. Many times, we hear the sound of birds but we cannot see them because they are hiding behind branches, twigs, and leaves of tropical rainforest. Apply mosquito repellent lotion before traveling to the forest.
I provide a three day tour around the tropical rainforest, islands in Manokwari of Papua. The tour includes a hiking in the jungle or snorkeling adventure around small islands in the Dorey bay.
